AI is a giant leap in technology, unlike anything else we have experienced, and will also be the leading factor in the economic development of the country, Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani said at the Mumbai Tech Week event at the Jio World Centre.

He elaborated on the statement saying, “To me, AI is the engine that will empower India to grow at 10 percent or double-digit growth numbers for the foreseeable future,” adding that AI can transform many industries for the better.

In his speech, Ambani also mentioned, Infrastructure, research and development, and talent investment are the three sectors that will help India become a global AI leader.

In his speech, Akash Ambani mentioned, "To unlock the true potential of AI, we need to ensure that there is continual investment in AI infrastructure and data centers that have the capacity to support millions of users," making reference to Jio’s recently announced gigawatt-capacity AI data center in Jamnagar.

He also emphasized the need for deep research and development, further claiming, “We are investing in deep research and development that stems from it,” stating how AI investment is going to benefit from the vision of Prime Minister Modi.

Also, Ambani underscored the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry to capture the top AI talent. “At Jio, we have already built a full-stack AI team comprising over a thousand data scientists, researchers, and engineers. The most important part of it is capturing new ideas and advancing the frontiers of innovation,” he remarked. He added that India is not far away from introducing a revolutionary AI platform designed for half a billion users.

Contrary to the belief that India does not have advanced technology, Ambani cited the emergence of new technologies in the country, “It is true that for many decades India was considered as a tech laggard but we have transitioned into the largest tech consuming nation in the world, ahead of even China.” he stated.

He remembered the rapid growth of internet speeds in India post 2015. “Back then it was below one megabit, both mobile or home. Now everyone has access to high speed data,” was his statement and he further said that he believes India can achieve this growth in AI too.

"We have already shown the world that we can lead in technology, not just advanced follower, like we have done in connectivity." Ambani said in conclusion.
