IIT Roorkee Scientists Identify Potential Drug for Chikungunya Treatment

In a major breakthrough, scientists at IIT Roorkee have identified a potential drug, Efavirenz, that may help treat chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has supported this study, which indicates that Efavirenz, already used in the treatment of HIV, could block the replication of the chikungunya virus and prevent its spread.

How Efavirenz Works Against Chikungunya Virus

Through testing on lab-grown cells and infected mice, scientists found that Efavirenz significantly reduced the levels of the chikungunya virus. The drug works by blocking the virus’s replication process, effectively slowing its spread in the body.

According to Dr. Sanket Nehul, the lead author of the study, Efavirenz interferes with the virus’s replication stage, preventing its growth. One of the key advantages of using Efavirenz is that it is already widely available for HIV treatment, which means that, if proven effective for chikungunya, the drug could be rolled out much more quickly and at a lower cost compared to developing a new drug from scratch.

Potential Effectiveness Against Other Viruses

In addition to its impact on the chikungunya virus, the study also found that Efavirenz inhibited the growth of the Sindbis virus, which is a close relative of chikungunya. This suggests that Efavirenz might have potential effectiveness against other virus infections, further broadening its potential applications.

Chikungunya: A Growing Concern

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The disease is characterized by high fever, severe joint pain, fatigue, and rashes. As there is currently no specific antiviral treatment available for chikungunya, this discovery could offer a significant new treatment option.

Next Steps and Clinical Trials

While this breakthrough is promising, IIT Roorkee scientists have emphasized that Efavirenz is not yet a guaranteed cure for chikungunya. Further clinical trials are required to assess the safety and effectiveness of the drug for chikungunya treatment. If these trials prove successful, Efavirenz could become an important tool in combating the disease.
