Agni Natchathiram 2025 Dates

Starting Date: Sunday, May 4th, 2025
Ending Date: Wednesday, May 28th, 2025

The 25-day stretch of Agni Natchathiram takes place during Kathiri Veyil, which is the most oppressive region of the year in Tamil Nadu. This region has a logical connection with the country’s beauty. This agni star is called so because the sun moves to the Krittika (Agni) star around this time.

Spiritual Significance

Devotees of Lord Murugan believe that because he is the divine warrior, his protection can be called upon, especially given that he is often depicted as the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is widely believed that Murugan blesses those who worship him with protection, success, and health. While it is unpleasant to deal with harsh heat, devotees do not seek comfort during this period. Instead, they use this time to seek Murugan’s blessings to drive negativity and bring peace into their lives.

The harsh terrain and heat provide an obstacle that makes new ventures seem totally undoable. While that may be true, it greatly serves as a form of spiritual discipline where faith wins over physical challenge.

Rituals and Observances

One of the most enjoyable activities is the Giri Valam where devotees take part in an energetic foot race around the Palani Murugan Temple.

Pilgrimage Rituals

In company of Ayyapan devotees, participants of this race start their run as the sun is rising, vocally reciting prayers and supplicating for protection and good fortune.

Use of Kadamba Flowers

As a sign of their faith, female followers adorn themselves with Kadamba flowers which are said to have special honor from Lord Murugan.

Daily Abhishekam

As Murugan’s idol is celebrated daily by having sacred Theertham poured over, in essence, giving a bath, daily Theertham Abhisheka takes place.

Final Day Ceremony

During the last day, this holy Theertham is shared with numerous worshippers. Some store it as a souvenir while others use it to fill communal wells or the temple's water tank.
