According to sources, Marvel and Sony are looking at Bernthal to bring his trademark intensity to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man franchise. While the specific character he would play remains a closely guarded secret, the idea of Bernthal facing off against Holland's Peter Parker has already sent waves of excitement through the fan community. Bernthal's acclaimed performances in shows like The Punisher, The Walking Dead, and most recently, The Bear, have cemented his reputation as a powerhouse actor capable of portraying complex and formidable characters.
This casting rumor is part of a larger, more significant development for the film, which is rumored to be adapting the iconic and controversial comic book storyline, "Brand New Day."
In the comics, "Brand New Day" was a massive status-quo shift for Spider-Man. After the events of "One More Day," Peter Parker's life is effectively reset. The world forgets he is Spider-Man, and his marriage to Mary Jane Watson is erased from history, allowing him to return to his roots as a struggling, anonymous hero.
Adapting this storyline would explain the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker was left completely alone and unknown to everyone he loved, including MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). It would provide a narrative reason for a fresh start, potentially with a different supporting cast and a new set of challenges, leaving Zendaya's return uncertain.
