Rohit Sharma silenced his critics with a stunning comeback in the second ODI against England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9. After struggling for runs in recent months, especially in Test cricket, Rohit had a disappointing outing in the series opener in Nagpur. His early dismissal raised concerns about his form, but the Indian skipper responded in style. Scoring a blazing 76-ball century, he guided India to a comfortable chase of 305 runs, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Rohit Leads the Charge, but Bowlers Struggle
While Rohit stole the show with the bat, he was well supported by Shubman Gill at the top and Shreyas Iyer in the middle order. However, India’s bowling unit, particularly the pace attack, struggled to make an impact. England’s batters took advantage early on, exposing the weaknesses of the Indian seamers.
Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and debutant Harshit Rana all proved expensive in their opening spells. Even as the match progressed, England’s batters played them comfortably, adding to India’s frustrations.
Rohit’s Outburst at Harshit Rana Over Costly Error
One particular moment caught everyone’s attention in the 32nd over of England’s innings. England skipper Jos Buttler played a defensive shot back to Harshit Rana, who fielded the ball. Seeing Buttler momentarily step out of his crease, Rana attempted a direct throw at the stumps. However, his throw went far wide, with no fielder at fine leg, allowing England to steal four runs without even running.
This reckless error infuriated Rohit Sharma, who was caught on camera yelling at Rana, saying, "Dimag kidhar hai tera? (Have you lost your mind?)" The young pacer, without making eye contact, simply walked back to his bowling mark. Rana ended his spell conceding 62 runs in nine overs with a solitary wicket, while Shami also had a rough day, leaking 66 runs in just 7.5 overs.
India’s Pace Woes Before the Champions Trophy
With the ICC Champions Trophy approaching, India’s pace attack remains a major concern. If Jasprit Bumrah is unable to recover in time for the tournament—an outcome that seems likely—the team management will have to carefully assess their bowling options for the crucial event in Dubai.
