As reported by Dawn on Monday, the meeting scheduled for the Pakistani parliament house is getting conducted on January 16, 2025. During that time, the third round of talks between the PTI and the Pakistan Government is set on the same date. The session is scheduled under the supervision of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
A year long turmoil took place from the debate where a lot of politicking and name-calling took place with the help of pontificators and the establishment of the PTI which leaded to vile negotiations. In an interview Qureshi stated, “A fearless leader in the political arena will emerge, if we engage both Nawaz Sharif regarding the condending elections that are competing. He went on with saying that the tensions between the PPP and the PTI significantly increased, which were only amplifying with the shocking arrests of Hijazi.”
Due to the ongoing turmoil in politics, PTI decided to form a five-member committee within PTI which would enable it to scale up its parliament-centric approach of engaging the government effectively. To put it in other words, the prime minister formed a committee from all the coalition partners to negotiate with the opposition, while he was presiding over the session.
The first round of these meetings was on December 23, 2024 and the second round on January 2, 2025. Looking at the reports made by a local source, Dawn, it can be seen that the PTI needed final rounds of negotiation as they were to fully formulate a set of demand that came from Imran Khan. To provide context, Asad Qaiser who is a MNA of PTI justified the engagement of his party into the negotiation process with the view that they would be able to resolve the deadlock in the forthcoming meeting.
The point of conflict is if the PTI can have clear access to Khan while still in jail. It has brought repeated complaints from the PTI that their negotiators headed by some senior party members cannot meet with Khan without guards being present. This was the point of contention which will finally compel the speaker to organise a meeting with Khan which was due over the weekend. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also spoke with the PTI leader privately prior to his forming part of the wider delegation.
PTI initiated the negotiating session by putting forth two key requests: the first is the release of all political prisoners, and the second is the establishment of a judicial body to determine the events of violence that transpired on May 9, and Novemer 26, 2024. Such demands are the basis of the negotiations that are under way, as PTI makes claims for accountability and political rights restoration.
