The number of WhatsApp scams continues to increase as proven by the recent case of 42-year-old Hari Krishnan from Bengaluru. Hari Krishnan received a WhatsApp message on January 19 which stated that traffic violations required a payment of fines. The ticket included both the download link for 'Vahan Parivahan' payment app along with its unique code according to TOI.

The phone displayed a warning that the file was potentially dangerous but Hari proceeded with the download based on his belief that the warning belonged to the usual process. Big mistake. The instant his phone received multiple OTPs he knew something went wrong because of the security threat. His phone had been hacked. The bank transaction report displayed that cybercriminals withdrew Rs 70,000 from his credit card.

His wife experienced further distress when messages alerting about bank account transactions appeared on her phone because some of her applications linked to his own phone. In this situation the scammers were unable to steal any money from her account.

After understanding he had become a victim of fraud Hari took immediate steps to stop the situation. He immediately cut off payment processes at his bank while approaching the cyber helpline for help. On January 29 he submitted the scam case to local police authorities. The police have established official charges following the IT Act and Section 318 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.

Users must always avoid downloading hoax APK files since they seem deceiving. Users should exercise basic care when protecting their personal data because scammers keep improving their craft.
