Next-Level Protection: Central Railway Upgrades Mumbai Suburban Trains with Accident Alert Technology

Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR) has undertaken a significant initiative by introducing Audio Alert Systems in the driving cabs of suburban local trains. This move aims to prevent accidents, collisions, and derailments caused by human error, thereby enhancing commuter safety. The initiative targets enhancing safety during local train operations by EMU rakes.

Installed within the motorman’s coach, the system will alert the motorman or motorwoman about red signals during their operations. This notification will enable them to bring the train to a complete halt.

As of now, the Audio Alert System has been implemented in 90 out of the total 151 EMU rakes in the CR Mumbai Division. The remaining 71 rakes are scheduled to be equipped with the system by March 2024.

The cost of implementing the Audio Alert System is Rs 18,000 per rake. After a train passes a Yellow signal, the system will alert the motorman that the ‘next signal is Red, be careful’.

This system’s introduction is expected to contribute to the avoidance of Signal Passing At Danger and reduce accidents on railway lines.

Considering that the Mumbai suburban network is one of the busiest in the world, the implementation of the Audio Alert System to warn motormen about impending red signals is a significant step towards strengthening passenger safety.

The suburban section of the Central Railway serves a large number of daily commuters on the mainline and harbor lines, operating between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and extending to Khopoli and Kasara.
