According to the ancient wisdom contained in the Garuda Purana the life span of a human being is destined by the divine but often lives are cut short due to unforeseen circumstances leading to what is known as Akal Mrityu or untimely death The scripture defines this as death resulting from accidents attacks by wild animals usage of weapons starvation or even suicide and it states that the journey of the soul in these cases is significantly different and more painful compared to a natural death caused by old age or illness

The texts describe that when a person dies naturally their soul travels to the higher realms or the court of Yama but in the case of sudden or accidental death the soul remains trapped in the earthly realm because its destined time has not yet been completed The soul takes on the form of a ghost or spirit and wanders with unfulfilled desires often suffering from sensations like hunger and thirst which it cannot satisfy without a physical body This state of limbo continues until the time their natural life span was supposed to end forcing the spirit to suffer in the ghost realm for that duration

Among all forms of untimely death the Garuda Purana identifies suicide as the most grievous sin condemning the soul to the hardest struggles in the afterlife because cutting one’s own life short goes against the laws of nature and the divine will To provide relief to these restless spirits and help them move forward the scriptures suggest that surviving family members perform specific rituals such as Pind Daan Tarpan and the Narayan Bali Puja which are powerful remedies designed to satisfy the soul and liberate it from the cycle of wandering as a ghost allowing it to eventually find peace
