A minor argument over the quality of fruits turned into a communal flashpoint in the Gandhigram area of Dehradun on the evening of Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The incident, which occurred during the Holi festivities, led to a tense standoff between two communities, prompting the authorities to deploy heavy police and PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary) forces to prevent a large-scale riot.

The area remains under strict surveillance as police work to identify all those involved in the ensuing stone-pelting and chaos.

The Trigger: A Dispute Over Fruit Quality

The incident began at a small fruit shop in the Lakshman Chowk police outpost area.

The Argument: According to the victim, Reshma Bala Sonkar, a 16-17-year-old youth purchased fruits from her shop. He returned a short while later, complaining about the quality of the fruits and using abusive language.

The Assault: The victim alleged that the youth threw the fruits at her, dragged her onto the road, and slapped her repeatedly.

Escalation: The youth reportedly called his associates to the spot, who then joined in the intimidation. As news of the assault on the woman shopkeeper spread, members of both communities gathered in large numbers, leading to a heated confrontation.

Chaos and Stone Pelting

What started as a personal dispute quickly took a communal turn:

Angry Mobs: Hundreds of people from both sides faced off in the narrow lanes of Gandhigram.

Violence: Stones were reportedly pelted during the commotion, creating a panic-like situation in the local market.

Police Intervention: Dehradun police, led by CO City Swapnil Muyal, rushed to the scene with additional reinforcements. It took several hours of persuasion and a mild show of force to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control.

FIR Registered and PAC Deployed

The Dehradun police have taken stern action to ensure the peace is not further disturbed.

Named Accused: Based on the shopkeeper's complaint, an FIR has been registered against individuals identified as Pintu (alias Chappal-wala) and Salim (alias Hotel-wala), along with several unidentified persons.

Charges: The accused have been booked under serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for assault, rioting, and inciting communal disharmony.

Security Measures: PAC units have been stationed at key intersections in Gandhigram and Lakshman Chowk to prevent any retaliatory violence.
