The summer capital of Uttarakhand, Gairsain (Bharadisain), became the center of political action today as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented the state’s budget for the 2026-27 financial year. In a session marked by both high-tech vision and high-decibel protests, the government unveiled a massive ₹1,11,703 crore budget a significant 10% jump from last year.

This budget isn't just about the numbers; it’s a clear roadmap for a "Self-Reliant Uttarakhand by 2047." With a focus on the hill economy, women's empowerment, and modern infrastructure, the Dhami government is shifting into "batting mode" ahead of the next election cycle.

Big Wins for Infrastructure and Agriculture

If you live in the hills or travel frequently across the state, the infrastructure push is the biggest takeaway. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been allocated a lion's share of over ₹2,500 crore to improve road connectivity.

But it’s the "Mission Apple" that’s catching everyone’s eye. With an allocation of ₹42 crore, the government is betting big on transforming Uttarakhand into a fruit-growing hub to boost farmers' income and tackle the long-standing issue of migration (Palan).

Social Safety and Women’s Empowerment

The budget also has a strong "human touch." For the daughters of the state, the Nanda Gaura Yojana has received ₹220 crore to support their education from birth through graduation. Additionally, the Chief Minister announced a unique initiative to build "Pink Toilets" in every village, focusing on dignity and hygiene for women in rural areas.

A Session of Protests and Protocol

The day wasn't without its share of drama. The opposition Congress, led by Yashpal Arya, staged a walkout during the Governor’s address, protesting the short duration of the session and raising concerns over unemployment and inflation. Despite the heated atmosphere, CM Dhami managed to create a bit of history by presenting the budget on the same day as the Governor's address—a first for the state.

Where is the Money Going?

 Department | Allocation (Approx)

Public Works (PWD) | ₹2,501 Crore

Urban Development | ₹1,814 Crore

Social Security Pensions | ₹1,327 Crore

Atal Ayushman Yojana | ₹600 Crore

 Mission Apple | ₹42 Crore

As the session continues through March 13, the focus will now shift to the detailed discussions. Whether these "crore-heavy" promises translate into ground-level change is what the people of the Devbhoomi will be watching closely.
