As a fresh Western Disturbance grips the Western Himalayas, Uttarakhand is bracing for a dramatic shift in weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weekly forecast predicting consistent rain and snowfall across the state until April 13, 2026. High-altitude regions are already feeling the chill as temperatures have plummeted to a freezing 1°C.

Snowfall Warning for Higher Reaches

The IMD Dehradun centre has highlighted that districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh are likely to witness significant snowfall. Areas situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters and above will see fresh white blankets, while the lower hills are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Yellow Alert Issued: Thunderstorms and Hail Likely

The weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for several districts, warning residents and pilgrims of potential thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (speeding up to 40-50 kmph). Isolated pockets in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions might also experience hailstorms, which could impact the local flora and ongoing agricultural activities.

Mercury Dips Across the State

While the plains of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun and Haridwar, were experiencing an early summer heat, the current weather cycle has brought much-needed relief. However, the mercury has taken a sharp dive. In hilly towns, the minimum temperature is hovering around 1°C to 5°C, making it feel like a return to winter. Even in the foothills, temperatures have dropped by 3°C to 6°C below normal.

Impact on Char Dham Yatra Preparations

With the rain and snow predicted to persist until April 13, authorities are keeping a close watch on the routes leading to the Char Dham shrines. Continuous precipitation in April can lead to localized landslides and slippery road conditions. Tourists and trekkers are advised to check the latest weather bulletins before heading to high-elevation zones.
