Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Apple is set to solve one of the biggest hurdles for its most secure login technology, Passkeys. With the upcoming release of iOS 18, the company will introduce a new feature that allows users to easily import and export their Passkeys, finally giving them the freedom to move their digital credentials between different devices and services.
Passkeys are the next-generation replacement for traditional passwords. Instead of a word or phrase you have to remember, they use your device's biometrics (like Face ID or Touch ID) to create a unique, phishing-proof login. However, a major criticism has been "vendor lock-in"—once you created Passkeys on an Apple device, they were largely stuck inside Apple's iCloud Keychain, making it difficult to switch to an Android phone or use a different password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden.
That's all about to change. As revealed at its recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple is adding import and export functions directly into the Passwords section of the Settings app across its new operating systems: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2.
This new capability will allow users to export all of their Passkeys into a standard file format. They can then take that file and import it into another service, giving them complete control over their digital identity. This move breaks down the walls between ecosystems and promotes the widespread adoption of Passkeys as a universal standard.
By giving users full ownership and portability of their most secure logins, Apple is not just improving its own platform but also helping to build a more open, interoperable, and secure digital future for everyone.
