Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Wimbledon, the world's most traditional tennis tournament, is once again teaming up with its long-term technology partner, IBM, to serve up a suite of groundbreaking AI-powered features designed to revolutionize how fans follow the action. The new tools, rolling out for the 2024 and 2025 championships, aim to make the tournament more accessible, insightful, and engaging for its global audience.
This year, fans using the official Wimbledon app and website will have access to two major enhancements powered by generative AI.
The first, a new feature called "Catch Me Up," acts as a personalized briefing service. It uses AI to generate daily summary cards with stories and analysis of the players a fan follows. Before a match begins, it provides a rundown of the players' tournament performance so far. If a fan joins a match late, the feature can quickly provide a real-time summary of the action they've missed, ensuring they are instantly up to speed.
The second major update is the "IBM AI Draw Analysis" tool. This feature provides a new level of insight by analyzing the entire tournament draw to forecast the potential difficulty of each player's path to the final. It assigns a "difficulty rating" to every player in the singles draw, allowing fans to see, statistically, who has the toughest road ahead.
Looking ahead to 2025, Wimbledon and IBM are preparing their most ambitious project yet: AI-powered commentary. Leveraging generative AI, they plan to add spoken commentary to video highlights from matches on the outside courts. These matches often lack live human commentators, leaving a void in the viewing experience. The AI will be trained to analyze the on-court action and provide insightful narration, dramatically expanding the coverage available to fans worldwide.
Chris Clements, Digital Products Lead at the All England Club, stated that the goal is to provide fans with "more insight into the draw and access to commentary on a wider range of matches."
This blend of tradition and technology underscores Wimbledon's commitment to enhancing the fan experience. By leveraging IBM's watsonx AI platform, the tournament is not just preserving its legacy but also ensuring it remains at the forefront of sports innovation.
