In the second test match being played between England and Sri Lanka at Lord’s, something was witnessed that hardly anyone could have imagined. England’s fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who remained unbeaten after scoring 74 runs on the first day, created history with the start of the second day. Gus Atkinson and Matthew Pott started taking England’s innings forward from the score of 358/7 on the second day. Atkinson started the second day with some great fours. Shortly after this, a new record was created with the bat of the English bowler.
Atkinson scored a century in just 103 balls at Lord’s. With this, he set not just one or two but a series of records. Gus Atkinson did the great feat of scoring not only his first Test century but also his first century in first-class cricket. The interesting thing was that his century came while batting at number 8. In this way, he became the sixth batsman to score a Test century by coming at number 8 at Lord’s.
Atkinson went ahead of Sachin and Kohli
With this century, Gus Atkinson did what even India’s great batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli could not do. Playing his second Test match at the historic Lord’s Cricket ground, Atkinson scored a century here, whereas Sachin Tendulkar could not score even a half-century, let alone a century, on this ground in his entire international career.
Every batsman dreams of scoring a Test century at Lord’s, which is called the Mecca of cricket, but Sachin’s dream could never be fulfilled. The Master Blaster’s highest score on this ground was just 37 runs. Virat Kohli’s situation here has been similar. Like Sachin, Kohli has also not been able to score a half-century at Lord’s to date, let alone a century. His best score at Lord’s is 45 runs which came in an ODI. However, Kohli will have a chance to score big here in the future.
England is in a strong position in the Lord’s Test
Gus Atkinson played a brilliant innings of 118 runs with the help of 15 fours and 4 sixes in 115 balls, due to which England’s team managed to score 427 runs in the first innings. In response, Sri Lanka’s first innings was reduced to 196 runs. England has taken a lead of 231 runs based on the first innings.
