WFI Membership Suspended: International Wrestling Federation Takes Firm Action Against Indian Wrestling Association
In a decisive move, the International Wrestling Federation has revoked the membership of the Indian Wrestling Association. This action comes in response to their failure to conduct elections within the stipulated 45-day period. The implications of this decision will soon be formally communicated by the relevant authorities. However, the International Wrestling Federation’s members are struggling to comprehend the legal injunction placed on these elections.
Why Were the Elections Postponed?
This year, the Indian Wrestling Association faced significant obstacles in organizing elections for its presidency. At the beginning of the year, a group of wrestlers protested against the incumbent president, Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan, accusing him of sexual misconduct. These allegations derailed the scheduled elections. According to the regulations, these elections were supposed to take place by June 2023. Nevertheless, in February, Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan was removed from his position, and his term ended in May. Despite this, various state units challenged the legality of the elections in court.
Monitoring WFI’s Affairs The committee of the Indian Wrestling Association was dissolved in January 2023, followed by another dissolution in May. Currently, the management of its affairs and daily matters falls under the jurisdiction of the committee of the Indian Olympic Association. Under the leadership of Bhupender Singh Bajwa, this decision was reached.
Rejection of Applications from Maharashtra and Tripura This time, both Maharashtra and Tripura won’t have representation in the Wrestling Federation of India’s elections. The returning officer deemed the claims of both factions ineligible. Additionally, Tripura has been estranged from the Wrestling Federation for the past six years, with reasons for this disconnect remaining undisclosed.
