The Uttarakhand state government is moving towards a significant social welfare reform. In a bid to provide better financial security to the vulnerable sections of society, the Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government is preparing to hike the monthly pension amounts for widows and persons with disabilities. Additionally, a major change in the eligibility criteria regarding the annual income limit is also on the cards.

Boosting Financial Aid for Widows and Divyangjans

Currently, thousands of beneficiaries in the state receive monthly pensions, but with the rising cost of living, there has been a persistent demand for an increase. According to sources within the Social Welfare Department, the proposal for the pension hike has reached the final stages of discussion. This move is expected to benefit a large demographic of the state, ensuring they can meet their basic needs with more dignity.

Revision of the Income Limit: More People to Qualify

Perhaps the most significant part of this update is the revision of the income limit. Currently, many needy individuals are excluded from the pension scheme because their family income slightly exceeds the existing threshold.

The Proposal: The government is planning to significantly raise the annual income ceiling.

The Impact: This revision will bring thousands of additional widows and disabled individuals under the safety net of government schemes, who were previously deemed ineligible.

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and Transparency

The Social Welfare Department is also focusing on streamlining the distribution process. The increased pension will be credited directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries via the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) system. This ensures that the funds reach the intended person without any middleman interference or delays, promoting transparency in the state’s welfare machinery.

Focus on Women Empowerment and Social Security

This decision aligns with the state’s broader goal of 'Antyodaya'—reaching the last person in the queue. By increasing the pension and relaxing the income norms, the government aims to empower women who have lost their spouses and provide better support systems for the 'Divyangjan' (differently-abled), making Uttarakhand a more inclusive state.
