Prior to the Chaitra Navratri festival on March 30, the government of Uttar Pradesh has announced a ban on the sale of meat and shutting down illegal slaughterhouses within a 500 meter radius from religious sites.
They will also put additional measures in place during Ram Navami on April 6 such as, shutting down all animal slaughter and meat sales until further notice.
As per a statement released by the UP government, PTI reports that Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, has called for District DM’s, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to enforce the prohibition alongside shuttering of meat sale venues near religious places.
During the press brief, The Yogi Adityanath government also claimed that mandates passed in 2014 and 2017 focused on digitized control over animal slaughter and the subsequent sale of meat directly next to religious areas.
In order to swiftly implement the directive, a district magistrate will chair a district level commitee which includes members of the Police, Pollution Control board, Animal Husbandry, Transport, Labour, Health and Food Safety Departments.
As per the statement, the Yogi Adityanath government has instructed officials to impose stern penalties upon violators in accordance with the UP Municipal Corporation Act of 1959 and the Food Safety Acts from 2006 and 2011. “The nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri dedicated to Goddess Durga will commence on Sunday the 30th of March”, is what stated the government.
