Suspense crime, Digital Desk : On Tuesday, President Donald Trump unveiled the Golden Dome, a missile defense system projected to cost $175 billion. For the first time in history, American defense weaponry would be stationed in space, creating an multi-layered barrier to defend against both nuclear and conventional missiles.

The system is expected to go live in three years as a response to the Pentagon’s concerns regarding the rapid advancements of missile technology in China and Russia.

Why It’s So Important

Since the Cold War, America has not seen such an extensive upgrade to its missile defense system, and this is expected to be the most sophisticated yet. It aims to eliminate threats at every stage of their trajectory, by integrating ground, naval, and aerial forces in a unified network.

“Golden Dome” allows the U.S. to preemptively intercept missiles deemed as threats, even if they are launched from the outer atmosphere.

System Capabilities:

As an effort for greater defense, the Golden Dome drew inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome which was instrumental in surmounting short-range rocket incursions. The system is constructed to counter a plethora of dangers including cruise and ballistic missiles, hypersonic weaponry, drones, and even objects outside of Earth’s atmosphere. In the words of Trump, the system is vital to America’s national defense and long-term survival.

Funding and Timeline

Trump proposed a 175 billion dollar budget and requested 25 billion dollars in tax funding which is part of a bill already circulating in Congress. The Congressional Budget Office’s projections for the budget estimate that the system’s calculated space portion will range anywhere between 161 to 542 billion dollars over 20 years.

As claimed by Trump, the system will be completely operational by the year 2029, although some features are expected to be implemented sooner.

Leadership and International Interest

The program was previously assigned to General Michael Guetlein, who currently serves as the Vice Chief of Space Operations. Trump also noted that Canada has shown interest and may participate in the program in pursuit of the defense.

Development Details

Various levels of the Golden Dome system, differing in the number of satellites and space-based interceptors, are being refined by the Pentagon. The program is still in its concept stage, with fully defined performance specifications yet to be established.

Future Outlook

The endeavor will likely take the United States two decades to complete. A majority of the funding will be aimed towards putting resources into placing systems in space to intercept missiles during early to mid-flight. For the U.S. Space Force, implementing these new requirements will demand a fundamental shift in operational structure and creativity.

Global Reactions

Russia and China condemned the Golden Dome as ‘destabilizing,’ arguing that placing military arms in space may further exacerbate military conflicts and initiate an arms race.
