Former President Donald Trump has reintroduced a policy to eliminate federal limits on water flow through household appliances. This includes showerheads, dishwashers, washing machines, and toilets. The executive order, signed Wednesday, aims to immediately cancel previous water conservation standards set during the Obama and Biden administrations.
Trump criticized current regulations, saying they make it difficult to properly use showers. “I have to stand in the shower for 15 minutes until it gets wet,” he said, referencing his issues with low water pressure. “It’s ridiculous,” he added.
Executive Action Targets Energy Department Rules
The new directive orders Energy Secretary Chris Wright to withdraw regulations that Trump called too complex. These rules were part of energy efficiency efforts under Democratic leadership. They were designed to reduce water and energy use in homes.
Trump’s administration claimed these measures complicated everyday appliances, calling them “a bureaucratic nightmare.” A White House statement said the order will return functionality to basic home items.
Environmental Advocates Push Back
Organizations supporting energy conservation, including the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP), criticized the move. ASAP director Andrew deLaski noted that most modern showerheads already deliver strong performance and meet energy-saving goals. He labeled the order a “gimmick” that bypasses a 1992 federal energy law.
According to the EPA, showers account for about 20% of daily indoor water use for American families. Reducing water flow also decreases the energy used to heat water, which contributes to household utility savings.
Impact Likely Limited, Experts Say
Despite the executive order, experts believe it will have little real-world impact. During Trump’s first term, similar efforts failed to produce changes in how manufacturers designed showerheads. Consumer preferences and existing product efficiency already meet demand, deLaski said.
