The White House said that Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order that would make English the sole official language of America.
As per a fact sheet surrounding the executive order, federal agencies and offices that receive federal grants will now have the option to limit the issuance of documents and services to English only.
Sources say that Trump was supposed to sign the order on Friday, but as of Friday night, the White House had not made an announcement and did not give responses to messages asking for clarification.
An order issued by Bill Clinton, which required the provision of basic language services to people who did not speak English, will be removed.
The White House argues that adopting English as the national language will, “further enhance national integration and foster efficient administration while also facilitating active participation in the government bye the public.”
According to US English, a non profit organization which advocates for English to be the national language of the US, over 30 states have already enacted laws stating that English is the official language of their state.
For years, Congress members have been pushing to make English the official language of the US, but they’ve been unsuccessful.
Last month, within hours of Trump taking office, the new administration removed the Spanish version of the official White House website.
The White House said they would be restoring it, but as of Friday, it still has not been restored. Hispanic advocacy groups and various other people expressed confusion and frustration over the change.
Following the removal of the Spanish version during his Trump's first term, it did get restored when President Joe Biden got sworn in.
The Wall Street Journal first reported on his order.
