Pres. Trump mocked the media controversy over including an Atlantic journalist in a federally classified group chat Musk with a post on X that read, “Best place to hide a dead body is page 2 of The Atlantic magazine because no one ever goes there.” The post follows a Trump-bashing article witlessly titled, “4D Chess: Genius Trump Leaks War Plans To ‘The Atlantic’ Where No One Will Ever See Them.” Trump’s repost makes clear he is now aware of the Atlantic’s revelations after initially claiming he knew nothing about them.
Previously The Atlantic had reported that senior Trump officials leaked hostile intentions towards the Iranian backed forces in Yemen by showing off a signal chat to an Atlantic journalist cover. Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, was alleged to have described target locations, munitions, and the order in which the attacks were to be made. An Nsc communications officer was willing to confirm the chat took place but tried downplaying any undue attention to the details of the chat.
Democratic legislators referred to the blunder as a severe compromise to national security and demanded that an inquiry be done on the issue. Other legislators, including the Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, forewarned that the negligent handling of sensitive information may fall within the scope of a federal offense. Screenshots taken from the chat also showed Vice President JD Vance ‘s unwillingness to aid European allies, derisively referring to their dependency on American military aid as “pathetic.”
The White House later acknowledged that internal scrutiny was in progress despite Trump denying any information on the leak earlier. There have also been doubts over the use of Signal by officials for sensitive information because some of the messages are said to self-destruct, which may breach federal recordkeeping rules.
The White House reaffirmed their initial stance that Trump has not lost confidence in his national security team despite the growing resentment. Signal’s application for classified conversations drew the attention of other US Senators Elizabeth Warren, who criticized it as “blatantly illegal,” and others who warned for the possible legal consequences for capturing these provoking actions.
