When Trump was president, a number of his aides in the US sought to discredit the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as he was trying to gain support to help with the military conflict against Russia. that took place in the London Euroepan Summit.
This pattern started by Trump seems to have continued, the White House staff and Republics Senators that I now appear on television are strongly suggesting that zelenskyy should be ready to agree to a variety of favorable terms for the Americans in exchange for aid and support. Some went as far as saying that he should consider stepping down where Ukrainians seem to support him for the time being.
After Zelenskyy trotted over to America out of embarassment, White House officials put him on blast before tearing apart the economic agreement Washington shared with Kyiv. This unresolved disagreement casts many doubts on the future of the relationship and on what seems to be a stalemate on the war that the Kremlin commenced on February 2022.
A former congressperson, Mike Waltz, claims that when he collaborated with the White House and offered geek solutions he realized that Zelenskyy never bothered to treat the day-to-day business of the cooperation in a respectful way.
Responding to the comparison between Zelenskyy and Churchill, Waltz commented that Churchill was voted out in the latter part of World War II.
“He was a man for a moment but did not transition England into the next phase,” Waltz said. “And I, for one, am not sure whether President Zelenskyy, particularly after what we saw Friday, is prepared to transition Ukraine to an end to this war and to negotiate, and to have to compromise.” While he maintained that there would need to be “Russian concessions on security guarantees,” it was clear he felt a negotiated end to the war would require territorial concessions from Ukraine. He was less clear on what he felt Moscow needed to do.
House Speaker Mike Johnson reinforced the suggestion Zelenskyy has to go.
According to Johnson, “Either he needs to come to the table with gratitude and wisen up to the circumstances, or someone else has to take the reins of the country to do that.” Trump’s director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, claimed that the contentious meeting has resulted in, “a huge rift in the relationship” attributing it to Zelenskyy’s statements on Fox News, where he claimed to feel no remorse for his actions.
She is also cautious. “There is going to have to be a rebuilding of any kind of interest in good faith negotiations, I think, before President Trump is going to be willing to reengage on this,” she added.
Washington worked in concert to pressure as Zelenskyy and European leaders attempted to navigate Trump’s xi soud policy shift. Expanding on this, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, “The UK will provide $2 billion pounds in export finance to buy 5,000 air defense missiles for Ukraine.”
The support for Zelenskyy nationally is still very low, especially after the meeting in the Oval Office, with many congressional Republicans opposing his efforts. However, with many Trump loyalists in the GOP, Lisa Murkowski stood out, the Alaskan Senator publicly called out the president on his view towards the Ukrainians.
“I understand that foreign policy is never an easy endeavor, but hearing the administration seemingly shifting towards sides with Putin, a clear threat towards the democracy and U.S values makes sick. It feels like they are willingly walking away from our compatriots,” Murkowski stated on X on Saturday.
More Republicans were against a recently passed bill that suggested Zelenskyy should be removed from power, like Senator James Lankford. He asked, “do you know what that would mean? That would spiral Ukraine into chaos right now.”
There were also people that were more supportive of Zelenskyy.
There is something it is ashamed of, and that is the millions of Americans, Senator Bernie Sanders claimed.
“To cut a long story short, it is our responsibility to defend the United States from being an example or a leader undermining the principles of democracy to a country seeking to do the moral” added Sanders.
Waltz appeared on CNN's “State of the Union”, Johnson, Sanders, and Lankford were seen on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, and Gabbard spoke on Fox News Sunday.
