A major train accident took place on Tuesday morning at Nihalgarh railway station, located on the Lucknow-Varanasi railway line in Amethi. A container truck got stuck at a closed railway crossing near the station when a high-speed freight train approached from the opposite direction. The collision was so forceful that the container was thrown into the air and shattered into pieces.
The impact was severe, causing the goods train to drag the container for nearly 100 meters. The train engine, electric lines, poles, and barricades were significantly damaged.
Injuries and Immediate Response
The accident resulted in injuries to both the container driver and the train driver. They were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Upon receiving information, railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), rushed to the accident site to assess the situation and oversee the rescue operations.
Disruption in Rail and Road Traffic
Following the accident, train services on the Lucknow-Sultanpur-Varanasi railway route were completely halted. Trains passing through the affected section had to be stopped, causing significant delays and congestion.
Railway employees and safety teams from the Northern Railway Division, Lucknow, were deployed to repair the damaged railway track, remove the debris, and restore normal operations.
Additionally, road traffic was affected as the Rae Bareli-Ayodhya highway faced a major traffic jam on both sides. Authorities implemented diversions for vehicles to ease congestion:
- Vehicles from Ayodhya were rerouted via Raniganj to Warisganj towards the Lucknow-Varanasi highway.
- Vehicles traveling to Ayodhya Dham from Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, and Pratapgarh were stopped at key points like Jagdishpur and Shri Ramganj crossroads, before being redirected through alternative roads.
Efforts to Restore Normalcy
Railway officials are working round-the-clock to repair the damaged infrastructure and clear the wreckage. The priority is to restore train operations on the busy railway corridor as soon as possible.
Authorities have also urged commuters and travelers to stay updated on train schedules and follow alternative routes for smooth travel.
