Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Great news for SUV enthusiasts and those looking for a more fuel-efficient ride in India! Toyota Kirloskar Motor has officially introduced a mild-hybrid (MHEV) version of its popular and commanding Fortuner SUV. This move aims to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, making the robust Fortuner a slightly greener option.

The new Fortuner mild-hybrid integrates a 48-volt hybrid system with its existing, powerful 2.8-litre diesel engine. This isn't a full hybrid that can run on electric power alone, but the mild-hybrid setup, featuring an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), is designed to provide engine assistance, enable an idle start/stop function (saving fuel in traffic), and improve overall mileage. Toyota claims this technology can boost fuel efficiency by up to 10%.

This mild-hybrid technology is now available in the standard Fortuner diesel 4x2 and 4x4 automatic variants. The pricing for these greener Fortuners starts at ₹33.43 lakh for the 4x2 AT and goes up to ₹35.99 lakh for the 4x4 AT (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). It's worth noting that Toyota has also updated its non-hybrid diesel Fortuner lineup, and the existing petrol variants continue to be offered.

The introduction of the MHEV system, which includes features like regenerative braking (capturing energy when slowing down to charge the small battery), is a step towards Toyota's broader goals of offering more environmentally conscious vehicle options. While the core strengths of the Fortuner – its ruggedness, space, and off-road capability (in 4x4 versions) – remain, the MHEV system adds an element of modern efficiency.

For those interested in getting their hands on this updated SUV, bookings for the Toyota Fortuner mild-hybrid are now open at Toyota dealerships across the country and can also be made online. This launch positions the Fortuner to better compete with rivals in the premium SUV segment like the MG Gloster, Skoda Kodiaq, and Jeep Meridian, particularly for buyers prioritizing fuel economy and reduced environmental impact.
