Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The long awaited collaboration for the Thug Life film, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan, comes together after thirty-eight years, as it was released today (5/6) and already has received a ton of mixed reactions online.

There was ample excitement considering the King of Tamil cinema Kamal and Ratnam’s long awaited Union, however, most of the feedback seems to be leaning towards the side of disappointment. The return of the evergreen Nayakan duo Kamal and Ratnam was bound to draw attention, but the audience reception is not what was expected. Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Joju George all had great buzz around their performances, and A.R. Rahman is known to never disappoint, but for some reason, the execution is where the viewers feel it failed greatly.

Audience Reactions:

One internet user wrote, "Mani Ratnam's direction still holds class and Rahman's music is solid. Kamal, STR, Trisha, and others do well. However, the story is predictable and the screenplay is flat. Expectations were high... TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT."

Another reviewer said, “#Thuglife - BELOW AVERAGE. The first half was mildly better than the second, which was a complete failure. 2/5.”

STR does well, but can't redeem the sluggish second half, which…THUGLIFE had potential but doesn't execute,” a viewer states.

A die-hard Ratnam fan tweeted, “Total let down for me. The second half felt completely drained. #STR is underused. Supporting roles don’t bring anything. The magic Chennai has missed in, Mani Ratnam.”

Another social media user added, “Very bland, flat, predictable. No creativity coming out of the #ManiSaar. Kamal comes off asbrash. #ARRahman‘s tracks, simply put, were highly overrated.”

Film Overview:

Kamal Hassan features in the movie along with Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Leiskhmi, and many others. Thug Life is an action thriller based on gangsters. Its co-producers are Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies.

The campaign executed prior to the project’s release created enormous excitement with the help of trailers, animations starring AR Rahman’s music, and impressive advertising. Nevertheless, preliminary reactions hint that the movie might not have lived up to the hype generated by the expectation set by the Kamal-Mani Ratnam combination.
