Haridwar. To keep the holy city clean and protect the Ganga and the environment, 206 km of sewerage lines will be laid by 2028. Upon completion of the project, approximately 15,000 domestic sewer connections will be provided. This will directly benefit 350,000 people.
Meenakshi Mittal, project manager for the Drinking Water Corporation (Ganga), said sewer lines are being laid in Haridwar and its satellite areas under the Ganga Rejuvenation Program, funded by the KfW German Development Bank. Of the total 206 km, approximately 150 km of sewer line work is being carried out in two packages.
In Package-1, 70 km of work is underway in Haripur Kalan, Bhupatwala, Bhimgoda, Harki Pauri to Railway Station, Brahmapuri, Old Industrial Area, etc. and in Package-2, 80 km of work is underway in Kankhal, Dwarika Vihar, Raja Garden, Ganpati Dham, Jagjitpur, etc. The remaining 56 km of sewer line work is under tender process.
The project is scheduled to be completed by 2028. The project will ensure safe, systematic, and sustainable wastewater management. It will significantly improve public health, improve living standards, enhance environmental protection, and contribute to the rejuvenation of the Ganga River. It will also help reduce groundwater pollution and improve the overall sanitation of the surrounding areas. To date, 40 km of the 75 km sewer line has been laid under Package 1 and 35 km under Package 2.
21 km of road has been reconstructed under Package 1 and 10 km under Package 2. Work on both packages is scheduled to be completed by June 2026. The project manager explained that the area from Har Ki Pauri to the railway station sees heavy traffic of pilgrims and vehicles throughout the day. Keeping in mind the convenience of pilgrims and traffic, the sewer line laying work is being carried out at night instead of during the day. The work is being carried out under the direction of the District Magistrate to avoid inconvenience to the public.
