Different religion practices have trained individuals to abstain voluntarily from meals or refreshments for a given duration of time. This practice is called fasting, and it can be done for a variety of reasons, including religion, health, detoxification, and in modern times losing weight. Fasting is viewed as one of the most effective ways for the body to detoxify, improve digestion, and lose weight.

Fasting has indeed been proven on help people with blood sugar control, heart problems, and even those looking to boost their immunity and aid digestion. Dehydration and extreme weakness due to lack of food and water are just some of the things to look out for when fasting too long.

There is new research being done on how fasting for a prolonged time affects one’s weight, cholesterol and the person’s diabetes, and the overall immune system functions.

Weight reduction: Studies suggest that there is noticeable weight decrease during fasting for Ramadan. However, these same studies show the lost weight tends to be recaptured unless the individual leads a healthy life.

Cholesterol levels: Some sources indicate that cholesterol levels tend to be better after periods of fasting. In one study there was found to be a drop in total cholesterol and triglycerides for men, but increase in good cholesterol (HDL) was seen in women.

Diabetes: Fasting can be especially dangerous for diabetes patients. Stressing again is the need to consult with a physician as well as stick to the basic proper diet and checked blood glucose levels throughout Ramadan.

Immunity: Fasting helps strengthen the immune system. It aids the body in combating infections and inflammation.

Pregnancy: Studies show that fasting during Ramadan does not severely harm babies, however experts still recommend avoiding fasting due to lack of research for pregnant women.

Kidney Health: Fasting during Ramadan requires abstaining from drinking water during the day which can lead to dehydration. Research shows that fasting during Ramadan does not harm kidney function or urine health in those who live a healthy lifestyle, but it does remain important to drink plenty of fluids during non-fasting hours to maintain kidney health.
