You've probably seen the pictures and memes of that bridge in Bhopal with the impossibly sharp turn. For weeks, it’s been the talk of the town and a viral sensation, widely ridiculed for what everyone thought was a 90-degree bend. Well, it turns out the real story has a different angle, literally.
An expert report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court has revealed the controversial turn on the Aishbagh railway overbridge is actually between 118 and 119 degrees. The report was prepared by a professor from the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) in Bhopal, who was tasked by the court to get to the bottom of the matter.
This whole situation landed in court after the construction firm, M/s Puneet Chadha, was blacklisted by the state government amid the public outcry. The company pushed back, filing a petition stating that they built the flyover according to the official design, known as the General Arrangement Drawing (GAD), provided by a government agency. They argued that the turn was never a right angle as it appeared in the viral photos.
Before this, the uproar over the bridge's design led to serious consequences. Several engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD), including two chief engineers, were suspended, and both the construction firm and the design consultant were blacklisted. Officials had initially defended the sharp turn, citing space constraints due to a nearby metro station as the reason for the unusual design
Now, with this new expert report, the state government is taking a step back. They have asked the High Court for more time to reconsider the action taken against the construction company. The court has agreed, setting the next hearing for September 17. This new development adds a fresh layer to a story tht has already raised serious questions about public infrastructure projects and accountability.
