After the most recent fatal event in Pahalgam, high ranking military officials confirmed that terror networks in Pakistan and Pak-occupied-Kashmir are still operational. They suggested that the timing of the attack—capital intensive but low in cost—might have been intended for weeks of international visits involving India.

Officials highlighted that while maintaining security measures along the 778 kilometer Line of Control, it has been noted that terrorists are now employing new ways to access Jammu and Kashmir. Last year, 10 militant infiltration attempts were successfully prevented which resulted in the elimination of 25 militants.

Security forces have reportedly killed 144 terrorists in the region over the past two years. However, the reason for concern is the intent of extremist groups who still plan to execute large scale conspicuous attacks. Terror infrastructure located in Pakistan and PoK enables operations of groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and United Jihad Council, Al Badr which are backed by religious schools and training camps.

Moreover, statements by the top brass of the Pakistani military continue to reinforce Pakistan's claim over Kashmir portraying it as an integral part of national identity. This is happening in the wake of a relative calm and peace in the region amid record breaking tourist footfall in the previous year.
