Suspended Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir proceeded with his controversial plan to lay the foundation stone of a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal on Saturday afternoon The event was held in the Rejinagar area amidst a massive gathering of supporters and local residents who chanted religious slogans such as Allahu Akbar and Nara e Takbeer as the ceremony took place The timing of the foundation laying was significant as it coincided with the anniversary of the demolition of the original Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6 1992 Kabir who serves as the MLA for the Bharatpur constituency performed the ritual alongside visiting clerics on a dais specifically erected for the occasion despite previous tensions surrounding the announcement To maintain law and order authorities had imposed a heavy security blanket across the region with large contingents of the state police the Rapid Action Force and central forces deployed to prevent any potential unrest in the sensitive area .

The politician had been suspended from the TMC earlier in the week by the party leadership which distanced itself from his activities and accused him of engaging in communal politics however Kabir remained defiant and stated that no force could stop him from going ahead with the construction which he claims will be completed within three years Critics including the BJP have labelled the move as appeasement politics while the TMC administration maintained that it does not endorse the act Kabir also used the platform to announce his future political ambitions stating his intent to launch a new party later this month to contest future elections independently The ceremony concluded without immediate violence but the atmosphere remained charged due to the political and historical sensitivities associated with the date and the name of the proposed structure
