Argentine Legend Scores Two Goals to Lead Inter Miami to 4-2 Victory and Make Leagues Cup History
Football icon Lionel Messi has made a sensational return to club action following the World Cup, reminding the world of his unparalleled brilliance. Displaying his vintage form in a rain-affected Leagues Cup fixture, the 39-year-old maestro scored two crucial goals and provided an assist to inspire Inter Miami to a resounding 4-2 comeback victory over Atlético San Luis. Beyond securing three vital points for his side, Messi's stellar performance etched his name permanently into the history books by making him the all-time leading goal scorer in the four-year history of the Leagues Cup tournament.
Early Setback Answered by Messi's Magic
The high-stakes encounter in Miami got off to a dramatic start when Atlético San Luis stunned the hosts by taking an early lead in just the fourth minute courtesy of a sharp David Rodriguez header. However, the deficit acted as an immediate catalyst for Lionel Messi to take complete control of the match. Responding brilliantly to the challenge, Messi equalized in the 11th minute by expertly slotting home a precise long cross from teammate Noah Allen. Maintaining relentless pressure throughout the first half, the legendary forward struck again from close range in the 44th minute, turning the scoreline around completely and electrifying fans inside the stadium.
Shattering Records and Extending Inter Miami's Unbeaten Streak
With his sensational brace, Messi reached a staggering milestone of 14 goals in just 12 Leagues Cup matches, successfully surpassing Los Angeles FC star Denis Bouanga (13 goals) to claim the all-time tournament scoring record. Not content with just scoring, Messi also delivered a pinpoint assist for Mikael’s header during the first-half stoppage time. Additional goals from Telasco Segovia cemented Miami's dominance, while teammate Allan contributed three crucial assists, offsetting Rafa Llorente's goal for San Luis. The victory successfully extended Inter Miami’s impressive unbeaten streak to eight matches.
Context of the Return and Overcoming Adversity
This stellar performance marked Messi's second appearance since returning from his grueling World Cup campaign with Argentina, where he led his national side to a second consecutive World Cup final before a narrow 0-1 defeat to Spain. Having previously played a 37-minute cameo as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew, Messi played a full, commanding role despite severe weather interruptions that forced a 30-minute match stoppage due to lightning in the second half. Inter Miami managed this vital win despite missing veteran striker Luis Suarez, who remains sidelined for the remainder of the tournament due to a six-match Leagues Cup suspension, proving that Messi's enduring magic remains the ultimate driving force for the club.
