Stepping back into historical storytelling following a packed calendar of mainstream releases, Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has officially kicked off shooting for an ambitious period drama directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Ritesh Batra. Batra, celebrated globally for sensitive, layered directorial works such as The Lunchbox and Photograph, is directing Khan in an undisclosed historical setting. While the production team has kept the core plot, ensemble supporting cast, and prospective theatrical release date closely under wraps, news of the cinematic partnership has triggered widespread excitement across cinephiles and industry trackers, signaling an artistic detour for the versatile actor.

Unconventional Filmography: Saif Ali Khan Returns to Immersive Period Roles

The collaboration adds another bold narrative chapter to Saif Ali Khan’s diverse, genre-defying career trajectory:

Expanding Artistic Frontiers: Renowned for steering away from conventional formulas, Khan has consistently built a portfolio filled with daring selections, including the landmark streaming series Sacred Games, dark comedies like Being Cyrus, and the raw, historical revenge drama Laal Kaptaan.

Packed 2026 Release Slate: The commencement of this untitled period production closely follows Khan’s high-profile appearances in major projects throughout 2026, including Kartavya and the action thriller Haiwaan.

Character-Driven Expectations: Pairing with a director known for subtle, emotionally nuanced storytelling sets high creative expectations, promising a deeply internal and textured performance distinct from typical period spectacles.

Ritesh Batra’s Global Acclaim: From The Lunchbox to Hollywood Signatures

Helming this period feature is Ritesh Batra, an auteur whose crossover career spans both Indian independent cinema and Western cinema:

The Breakthrough of The Lunchbox: Batra made an unforgettable international directorial debut in 2013 with The Lunchbox, starring the late Irrfan Khan alongside Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, earning BAFTA nominations, Filmfare trophies, and international festival accolades.

Western Directorial Ventures: Batra subsequently built an impressive global footprint, directing the British literary drama The Sense of an Ending followed by Netflix’s acclaimed romantic drama Our Souls at Night, featuring screen legends Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Intimate Visual Language: With his subsequent Mumbai-based feature Photograph, Batra solidified his reputation for authentic spatial texture and unhurried character journeys, elements that industry insiders expect to elevate his forthcoming period drama.

Looking Back: Saif Ali Khan’s Recent Box Office Outing in Haiwaan

The start of Batra's period project comes on the heels of the commercial run of Saif’s recent crime thriller Haiwaan, directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan:

Premise and Star Cast: In Haiwaan, Khan shared screen space with Akshay Kumar in a gritty narrative centered on a visually impaired martial artist risking everything to shield an endangered young girl from a psychopathic killer.

Box Office Trajectory: According to commercial entertainment data from trade tracker Sacnilk, Haiwaan encountered mixed critical reviews and struggled to generate box office momentum during its initial theatrical run.

First-Week Collections: The film posted an opening-day domestic haul of Rs 3 crore, followed by Rs 2.50 crore on Day 2 and Rs 1.85 crore on Day 3, concluding its comprehensive opening week with approximately Rs 9.85 crore net across the Indian box office.
