Celebrating 14 years since the cinematic debut of his flagship youth franchise, blockbuster producer Karan Johar dropped a spine-chilling surprise for entertainment buffs by officially announcing a radical, horror-infused web series titled Student of the Year: After Dark. Shattering the trademark pastel glamour, high-end designer wardrobes, and bubblegum romance that historically anchored the SOTY universe, the filmmaker unveiled a jarring first-look poster featuring budding star Shanaya Kapoor soaked in blood, signaling an uncompromising plunge into raw violence, psychological dread, and visceral horror. Slated to premiere exclusively on streaming platform JioHotstar on November 13, 2026, the series aims to subvert audience expectations by turning prestigious school corridors into arenas of lethal intrigue and sinister competition.
A Sinister Shift: First Look Teases Blood, Psychological Dread, and Mayhem
The promotional reveal instantly set social media feeds abuzz by breaking away from the franchise's traditional glossy aesthetic:
Shocking Visual Reveal: The unveiled promotional artwork presents Shanaya Kapoor with blood spattered across her face and attire, teasing a dark, unsettling storyline that departs sharply from conventional teen campus narratives.
Karan Johar's Candid Warning: Reflecting on the franchise’s 14-year anniversary, Johar took to Instagram to share his creative pivot, stating that nostalgia was running deep as the team takes SOTY on a completely reimagined journey into After Dark—a show he described as raw, bloody, bold, and absolutely insane.
Redefining Saint Teresa’s: Rather than focusing on breezy track-and-field rivalries or prom nights, the narrative reconstructs the iconic "Saint Teresa’s" campus as the shadowy backdrop for a ruthless, high-stakes thriller tournament.
Dual Personas and Fresh Faces: Shanaya Kapoor Leads Under Reema Maya's Vision
The streaming series represents a massive platform for Shanaya Kapoor's official digital debut, anchored by prominent creative minds:
Demanding Double Role: Venturing into challenging dramatic territory, Shanaya Kapoor will portray complex dual roles, anchoring two diametrically opposed characters caught inside a web of campus deception.
Indie Directorial Touch: Acclaimed filmmaker Reema Maya takes the director’s chair, bringing her signature edge, visual tension, and unconventional staging to the Dharmatic Entertainment production.
Ensemble Supporting Cast: Alongside Shanaya's central dual performance, the thriller features dynamic screen additions from emerging talents Divik Sharma and Manya Grover, each essaying pivotal roles in the competitive survival dynamic.
From Bubblegum Campuses to Dark Suspense: Evolving the SOTY Legacy
The streaming adaptation redefines a box office franchise that famously launched some of modern Bollywood's biggest marquee names:
The 2012 Debut Landmark: Directed by Karan Johar in 2012, the original Student of the Year served as a sensational launchpad for Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra, establishing a gold standard for glossy college cinema.
The 2019 Sequel: The banner returned in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, showcasing Tiger Shroff alongside breakout debuts from Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.
A Grounded, Fear-Driven Horizon: Moving away from dance-offs and athletic trophies, After Dark reinvents the property for mature, digital-first audiences, using suspense, horror elements, and psychological confrontation to explore youth pressure in a twisted environment.
Premiere Schedule: Exclusive Streaming on JioHotstar from November 13
Viewers tracking the evolution of Dharma's digital arm will not have to wait long for the multi-episode thriller to unfold:
Digital Premiere Date: Student of the Year: After Dark is officially scheduled to land exclusively on JioHotstar on Friday, November 13, 2026.
Binge-Ready Format: Backed by Dharmatic Entertainment and executive produced by Karan Johar, the series will rollout as a core Hotstar Specials release, designed to hook thriller enthusiasts through gripping cliffhangers and intense character conflicts.
