Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has finally been cleared of his suspect bowling action, putting an end to months of uncertainty and controversy. The 37-year-old had previously failed two tests but has now successfully cleared his latest reassessment, allowing him to bowl again in international cricket.
Shakib Cleared After Third Attempt
Shakib’s bowling action first came under scrutiny in September 2024 during a County Championship match for Surrey against Somerset. Following an independent evaluation, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declared his action illegal and subsequently suspended him from bowling.
Since then, Shakib underwent two reassessments—first in England and then in India—failing both attempts. However, in his third test, conducted in England, Shakib was able to pass successfully, proving the phrase "third-time lucky" right.
Confirming the news to Cricbuzz, Shakib expressed his relief, saying:
"The news is right (about passing the bowling test), and I am cleared to bowl again."
Impact on His Champions Trophy Participation
Shakib’s suspension from bowling had a significant impact on his international career, leading to his exclusion from Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy squad. The selectors were reluctant to pick him as a specialist batter, leaving him out of the ICC event he had earmarked as his farewell tournament.
With his clearance now secured, it remains to be seen whether Shakib will return to Bangladesh’s plans for upcoming tournaments. His reinstatement as a bowler is a huge boost for both Bangladesh cricket and his farewell aspirations.
