Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : TMC Crisis: Even a month after her crushing defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee's problems show no signs of abating. The party rebellion has now spread to Delhi while the exodus of MLAs and MPs continues unabated.
Even a month after her humiliating defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) president Mamata Banerjee's troubles show no signs of ceasing. The rebellion in the party which began in Kolkata has now reached the national capital while the exodus of MLAs and MPs has been continuing relentlessly. Mamata Banerjee has already had to face five major setbacks this week that have completely shaken the TMC's foundation. Her strategists are perplexed at how to handle the situation and gain control.
Rebellion reaches Parliament
Already, as many as 58 of the 80 TMC MLAs had raised the banner of revolt in the Bengal Assembly and even supported Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition. Now, this rebellion has reached the Lok Sabha as well, with the rebel MPs all set to meet the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla on Monday, to submit a letter. The rebel MPs intend to be recognised as the 'real TMC' and have asked for legitimacy as a distinct faction. The loyalist leaders in TMC have rejected the move entirely as illegal and that, according to law, all rebel candidates must either merge with another party or re-join their original party. They cannot be recognized as separate faction.
Son of Kakoli Ghosh lodges legal case
A legal notice has been served to top TMC leaders including Mamata Banerjee and a legal case against Mahua Moitra, Kalyan Banerjee, Saugata Roy, Sonali Guha among others by Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar who is Kakoli Ghosh's son, who was the strongman in the party and a rebel MP of TMC. All of them have been blamed by Baidyanath for falsely accusing Kakoli of seeking a ticket for Barasat seat. He has also asked to retract their claims or publically apologize within a fortnight.
Sayani Ghosh crosses the divide
To tell the truth, news of Jadavpur MP Sayani Ghosh crossing the floor this week dealt another blow to Mamata Banerjee. Although Sayani, an actress-turned-politician had strongly supported Mamata Banerjee following her electoral defeat but it appears she has joined the faction of the rebels this week. When confronted about the incident on Sunday, she remained guarded saying, 'I don't have anything to say right now. Will speak at the appropriate time'.
Mahua Moitra fires salvo at Sudeep
Amidst this, on Sunday, TMC MP Mahua Moitra targeted a veteran leader of the party, Sudip Bandyopadhyay alleging that he had met with the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. In a Facebook post, Mahua wrote, "Dada, plz do change yr twitter handle to @SudipBJPBTeam now. Dont use our name.".
Abhishek Banerjee's residence raided
The house of Abhishek Banerjee was raided by the state police and the central forces on Friday and Saturday night. His PA, Sumit Roy was wanted in a case of fraud. Upon receiving news of the raid, Mamata Banerjee reached his house and stayed during the entire period of the raid. Earlier too, the CID had questioned Abhishek in connection to forgery.
Organizational rejig
To gain full control of the party, Mamata Banerjee had carried out major revamps of the youth and women wings earlier this week. Arnab Banerjee has been appointed as the new president of the youth wing and Malu Roy replaced by Alifa Ahmed as the new president of women's wing after Sayani Ghosh's switch.
