Comedian Kunal Kamra is facing fresh controversy after Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam alleged on Saturday that the comedian received over ₹4 crore in foreign funds in violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Nirupam has also demanded that central agencies investigate the source of these contributions.
Nirupam Claims Funds Came from Multiple Countries
At a press conference, Nirupam claimed Kamra received foreign donations from countries including Canada, Australia, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. He accused Kamra of accepting funds from "anti-India individuals and organizations," suggesting that this could lead to sedition charges.
“Kamra has been getting funds from anti-India people and organizations. This is an FCRA violation,” Nirupam said.
He added that most donors belonged to a "particular community" and questioned whether a fatwa had been issued to support Kamra financially.
Political Row Over Kamra’s Jibe at Eknath Shinde
Kamra became the center of a political storm after making a satirical remark about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde during a show. Following his statement, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the studio where he had performed.
Allegations of Links with Shiv Sena (UBT)
Nirupam also alleged that Kamra had received backing from Matoshree, the residence of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, claiming that Kamra is under their influence.
“We will approach central agencies to act against Kamra. He cannot escape now,” Nirupam asserted.
