The mother of the RG Kar Hospital junior doctor, who was raped and murdered in August last year, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case and ensure justice for her daughter.
Speaking on International Women’s Day, she questioned women's safety in West Bengal, expressing frustration over the delay in justice.
"I would like to meet the PM and appeal to him to intervene in the matter and look into our appeal for justice for our deceased doctor," she said.
Family Demands Justice Seven Months After the Incident
The 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024, sparking nationwide outrage. Despite the passage of seven months, the bereaved mother claimed that the family had not even received the death certificate.
"Our daughter had big dreams. We never imagined she would meet such a tragic fate. Seven months have passed, but where is justice?" she asked.
She further raised concerns about safety in workplaces, asking, “If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is security?”
Political Reactions to the Mother's Appeal
Reacting to her request to meet PM Modi, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul stated that there is a formal process to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister but expressed confidence that Modi would listen to the family’s plea.
Trinamool Congress leader and state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya responded by saying that while anyone in the country has the right to meet the Prime Minister, she emphasized that CM Mamata Banerjee had taken the first step in ensuring the arrest of the culprit.
Legal Proceedings and Appeals for Death Sentence
A sessions court in Kolkata sentenced the accused, Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, to life imprisonment till death on January 20, 2025. However, both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal state government have filed appeals in the Calcutta High Court seeking the death penalty for Roy.
On February 7, 2025, the Calcutta High Court refused to accept the state government’s appeal against the life sentence but agreed to hear the CBI’s plea for capital punishment.
What’s Next?
The family continues to demand justice and stricter punishment for the convict, hoping that PM Modi’s intervention will lead to faster legal action. Meanwhile, women’s safety and justice delivery remain key concerns in the case, with both state and central agencies involved in the legal battle.
