The tragedy occurred on August 7, 2020, when Air India Express flight IX-1344, a part of the "Vande Bharat Mission" to repatriate Indian citizens from Dubai, crash-landed at Kozhikode's Calicut International Airport. The aircraft overshot the tabletop runway amidst heavy monsoon rains, breaking into two pieces upon impact and resulting in the deaths of numerous passengers and both pilots.
