3 Dead, 10 Injured as Car Hits Tanker, Plunges Into Ditch in Rajasthan
A devastating road accident on National Highway 27 (NH-27) in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district on Friday, November 6, 2026, claimed the lives of three laborers, including a woman, and left ten others injured. The tragedy unfolded near Menal when a speeding passenger car collided with a parked water tanker and plunged into a 15-foot-deep construction pit, landing directly on workers below. The laborers were engaged in excavation and construction work for an under-construction overbridge when the out-of-control vehicle crash landed on them. The impact was so severe that it caused instantaneous fatalities and triggered a massive rescue operation by local authorities, police personnel, and passing commuters on the busy Chittorgarh-Kota highway.
High-Speed Crash on NH-27: How the Tragedy Unfolded
According to the local police, the incident occurred during peak work hours on Friday near the Menal Joganiya Mata road section, where a new overbridge is currently being constructed on NH-27. A speeding car, carrying six passengers and traveling from the Chittorgarh side toward Kota, reportedly lost control on the highway. Before the driver could decelerate or steer away, the vehicle crashed into a large water tanker parked on the shoulder of the highway, which was being used to supply water for the ongoing construction and dust-control activities.
The force of the collision redirected the speeding car, sending it careening off the road. It plunged 15 feet down into a heavily excavated pit dug out for the overbridge's foundation. Seven laborers were working inside this pit, entirely unaware of the vehicle falling from above. The heavy vehicle landed squarely on the workers, trapping them under its crumpled chassis and the crumbling earth of the ditch.
Three Laborers Killed Instantly; Victims Identified
Upon receiving the alert, local villagers, fellow construction workers, and passersby rushed to the spot, scrambling down into the 15-foot pit to pull survivors from the debris before emergency services arrived. Despite their efforts, three of the laborers trapped under the vehicle could not be saved.
Emergency responders and the police later identified the deceased as 45-year-old Bihari, a resident of the neighboring Bhilwara district; 50-year-old Savta, who hailed from Mandalgarh; and 40-year-old Prem Bai, a resident of Gangrad. Police confirmed that all three victims were daily-wage earners hired for the highway overbridge project. Their bodies were recovered from the pit and sent to a local government hospital for post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their grieving families.
Ten Injured in Crash; Three Fight for Life in Bhilwara
The crash also left ten people with varying degrees of trauma, including four laborers who were working alongside the deceased in the excavation pit and all six occupants of the errant car. The injured were rescued from the debris and rushed to a nearby hospital in Begun for immediate medical evaluation.
As their conditions was assessed, three of the injured—whose identities have not yet been released—were found to be in highly critical condition, suffering from severe head, chest, and internal injuries. Recognizing the need for specialized trauma care, doctors referred the trio to a larger, better-equipped healthcare facility in Bhilwara. The remaining seven injured passengers and workers are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals, where their conditions are being closely monitored.
Police Launch Investigation; Cases Registered Against Both Drivers
Following the incident, Begun Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ankit Kudi and a team of officers arrived at the scene to inspect the impact point, coordinate the rescue, and restore traffic flow on NH-27, which had become congested with onlookers. Preliminary findings suggest that high speed and inadequate safety barriers around the active 15-foot construction zone may have contributed to the disaster.
The police have registered cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the drivers of both vehicles:
The Car Driver: Investigated for high-speed, reckless, and negligent driving that led to the loss of control and the subsequent plunge into the work zone.
The Tanker Operator: Scrutinized over the placement and visibility of the stationary water tanker, as parking heavy utility vehicles on highway shoulders without proper reflective hazards, caution cones, or safety signage poses an acute danger to fast-moving traffic.
Site Safety Evaluation: The investigation will also determine whether the construction concessionaire and contractors had installed mandatory high-visibility safety barriers, warning signs, and crash-cushions to protect the workforce in the deep pit from highway intrusion.
Ongoing Concerns Over Highway Work-Zone Safety
This tragic event has once again put a spotlight on the safety of laborers working on major infrastructure projects along high-speed corridors in India. National Highway 27 is a heavily trafficked arterial route, and the absence of robust protective barriers between fast-moving lanes and deep excavations often leaves workers highly vulnerable.
As families mourn the loss of Bihari, Savta, and Prem Bai, local labor unions and residents are calling for stricter enforcement of safety protocols at construction sites, urging developers to install concrete crash barriers and prominent warning signs to prevent such preventable disasters. The police have assured a thorough inquiry, and further legal actions will proceed as the investigation into the crash continues.
