Veteran director Puri Jagannadh has announced a new film with acclaimed actor Vijay Sethupathi, but the reaction has been mixed. The project, revealed on Ugadi (March 30), was expected to mark a significant comeback for Puri, whose recent films have underperformed at the box office. Despite his past successes, some netizens labeled him "outdated" and questioned Vijay’s decision to collaborate with him.

According to The Times of India, an X user posted a now-deleted criticism, expressing disappointment in Vijay Sethupathi for choosing to work with Puri after a string of commercial flops like Liger and Double iSmart. The user remarked that Vijay should have been more selective post his recent hit, Maharaja.

Actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj Defends the Director

In response to the criticism, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj stood up for both Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Sethupathi. “Never say that about someone brother…Please use words wisely on a public platform… end of the day, he is a reputed filmmaker and there’s a certain amount of respect we should give another person,” Shanthanu posted, urging civility in public discourse.

Despite the online backlash, many users also expressed hope that this collaboration could revive Puri’s standing. “Puri can’t afford to waste another opportunity. He has to be at his best,” one comment read. Another user added, “This is your last opportunity, Puri Sir… give your best or consider stepping back.”

Fans Divided Over Director's Comeback and Actor’s Choices

While a segment of the online audience continued to question Puri’s relevance, others welcomed the pairing and urged fans to support the director’s fresh start. Some speculated whether Shanthanu’s strong defense indicated possible involvement in the project.

The original post critical of Puri was later deleted, with the user offering an apology and promising to be more mindful in the future. However, discussions continued over whether actors like Vijay Sethupathi should be above criticism, especially given their track records.

Apart from the new collaboration with Puri Jagannadh, Vijay Sethupathi has multiple upcoming projects, including Train, Ace, and an untitled film.
