Qaumi Insaaf Morcha Punjab Bandh: Markets Deserted Across 18 Districts During Seven-Hour Strike
Normal life came to a temporary standstill in Punjab as a seven-hour state-wide strike called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha brought major commercial hubs, markets, and streets to a deserted state. The protest, which ran from early morning through midday, significantly impacted daily life and transportation across approximately 18 districts.
Punjab Bandh and Public Disruption
The strike, announced by the Morcha to press for their demands, caused widespread closures of commercial establishments and markets across the region. Local authorities deployed heavy police personnel at key intersections and sensitive locations to maintain law and order and prevent any escalation.
While the bandh largely remained peaceful, commuter movement faced notable hurdles. Public transport and private vehicles encountered delays, and emergency vehicles like ambulances experienced bottlenecks at traffic diversion points. Minor verbal altercations and brief clashes between security personnel and demonstrators occurred in a few areas, leading to temporary detentions before protesters were released.
Core Demands of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha
The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha is a collective platform comprising multiple Sikh organizations advocating for the release and parole of specific Sikh prisoners who have completed their judicial sentences. Key figures whose releases are being demanded include:
Balwant Singh Rajoana: Sentenced in connection with the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh.
Jagtar Singh Hawara: Convicted in high-profile legal cases involving anti-state actions.
Other Detainees: The organization is also seeking relief for other long-term prisoners, including Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, Jagtar Singh Tara, and Paramjit Singh Bheora.
Leadership and Support Base
The agitation has garnered backing from various socio-political entities, including regional political factions, farmer associations, and traditional Sikh bodies such as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Led by conveners like Bhai Pal Singh France, the organization continues to push its agenda through public mobilizations, seeking administrative review for the long-standing imprisonment of these detainees.
