Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged his strong relationship with former US President Donald Trump, built on mutual trust. He described Trump as a leader with a well-defined strategy, stating that each of his steps was planned to achieve his objectives.
Recalling the Howdy Modi event in Houston in 2019, Modi shared an anecdote where Trump demonstrated humility. “The entire stadium was packed. Both of us spoke, and he sat in the audience, listening. It was a remarkable gesture,” Modi said on the Lex Fridman Podcast.
He also mentioned a notable moment when he asked Trump to take a walk around the stadium. “Without hesitation, he agreed and started walking with me. His security was surprised, but for me, it was a touching moment. It showed his courage,” Modi added.
Even during Joe Biden’s presidency, Trump continued expressing his admiration for Modi. “Whenever he met someone who knew both of us, he would say, ‘Modi is my friend, convey my regards.’ Such gestures are rare,” Modi noted.
When asked about Trump calling him a great negotiator, Modi responded, “It is kind of him to appreciate me, but my priority is always my country’s interests.”
India-China Relations and Path to Stability
Discussing India-China relations, PM Modi highlighted the historical depth of their interactions. He emphasized that both nations have contributed significantly to global progress over centuries.
"India and China share ancient civilizations and have historically learned from each other. Even now, they play a crucial role in the global economy," he stated. Modi noted that at one point in history, the two countries together accounted for over 50% of the world's GDP.
Regarding the 2020 military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Modi acknowledged past tensions but stressed the need for resolution. "Differences are natural between neighbors, just like within a family. But we are focused on ensuring these differences don’t escalate into disputes," he said.
He reaffirmed efforts to restore bilateral relations to pre-2020 levels. "Trust, enthusiasm, and cooperation will gradually return. It will take time, but strong India-China ties are crucial for global stability and prosperity," Modi concluded.
He emphasized the importance of healthy competition over conflict. "The 21st century belongs to Asia. India and China must compete in a natural and constructive way for mutual growth," he added.
