
On April 11, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Varanasi where he was given a recap regarding the recent gang-rape incident of a 19 year old woman. He talked with the Police Commissioner, Divisional Commissioner, and District Magistrate upon arriving. Modi highlighted that the law must be maximally severe in dealing with the offenders and also urged for new, more effective methods of prevention to be implemented.
Gang-Rape Incident of Varanasi: The Details
Trial of Victim: This 19-year-old girl is said to have been gang-raped within the time span of a week by 23 men from March 29 to April 4, 2025. It is alleged that she was intoxicated and abducted to numerous places like hotels and hookah lounges where she faced terrible abuse.
Actions taken by the Police: A case has been filed for an FIR against 12 named and 11 unnamed accused under applicable portions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Nine accused have been taken into custody and moved to judicial custody, which the police are actively looking for the remaining suspects.
Comments of Victim: Post her getting some medical help, the victim explained that she was made to drugged and endured terrible abuse of being unconscious on April 4.
Response from Government and Subsequent Actions
The commnences from the government is exemplified by the order from Prime Minister Modi which clearly demonstrates the need of taking care of the crimes injurious to female population and punishing the perpetrators with appropriate vigor. Also, the government is working on steps that will mitigate or totally eliminate any chances of repeat incidents in future.
