A study from LocalCircles states that Delhi-NCR area families have been experiencing symptoms of viral illness for more than a month now. The findings suggest that at least 54 percent of families have one or more members experiencing cough and flu like symptoms which are probably due to the change in season.
Who is most at risk?
Younger children and adults above 50 years of age are particularly susceptible to viral infections according to survey results which state they present headache, cough, fatigue, low-grade fever, and a respiratory problem. Those suffering from underlying health issues like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD and heart disease also stand to develop further complications.
In the pneumonia and bronchitis cases, patients have been seen suffering from severe viral infections but the primary cause of infection came from the local area hospitals as per LocalCircles.
The survey had over 13000 participants that resided in the regions of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Out of the total, 63 percent were men and the rest women.
In this survey, respondents living with people under their care having sore throat, cough, headache, fever, runny nose, respiratory problems, or body ache were asked the maximum number of individuals experiencing the above symptoms. The responses were:
• 9% said 4 or more family members are ill.
• 45% said 2-3 family members are ill.
• 36% reported no family member claimed to be ill.
The percentage of ill households reported in the previous month’s survey conducted in August 2024 was 38%. Currently this number has increased significantly to 54%. This indicates a decrease in seasonal well-being.
To stay safe,
Infection rate can also be reduced by taking some further measures. Dr. Nehal Shah, a consultant in pediatric medicine at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, recommends the following precautionary actions:
• Get vaccinated. Severe illness can be prevented by getting an annual flu shot which also protects against H1N1.
• Wear a mask. Put on a proper N95 or surgical mask in badly ventilated or crowded spaces.
• Wash hands. Wash hands with soap and water often, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
• Refrain from face touch. Use of contaminated surfaces brought in contact with the mouth, nose or eyes can lead to virus spreading.
• Maintain social distance. Closely monitor persons who exhibit flu-like symptoms and keep some distance when next to them.
Drink fluids: Adequate intake of fluids is beneficial for keeping the respiratory system in good shape. Remember to stay hydrated.
Remember to cover your mouth while sneezing or coughing: Try to use a tissue or preferably your elbow to cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and avoid littering tissues everywhere.
Wipe germs off surfaces: Make sure you clean objects that are touched often like doorknobs, phone screens, and keyboards regularly.
