OpenAI has stated that free-tier users can now use the image generation feature in ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman also commented on the matter with a post on X, previously known as Twitter. In the post, Altman said, “Chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!”
Altman stated that the feature gained one million new users within an hour of its rollout to free accounts. “The chatgpt launch 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments i’d ever seen. We added one million users in five days, and today we added one million users in the last hour,” he pointed out on social media.
Previously, this feature was only available to paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team Plans, however, after it’s fantastic reception with premium users, OpenAI has now made the feature available to free-tier users. The rollout started on March 29 and opened up to all free-users by April 1.
The captivating image generation feature based on OpenAI’s GPT-4o model can create Studio Ghibli-style visuals and has captivated users with other interesting outputs. Users have posted stunning anime-style images on social media while experimenting with the tool.
In OpenAI’s blog post, it captured how “GPT-4o image generation excels at rendering text, following complex prompts, and utilizing 4o’s knowledge and chat observation context including merging uploaded images or using them as reference images.”
Though popular, OpenAI was forced to restrict the offer to manage demand. Users on the free tier can generate three images a day, whereas those on paid subscriptions do not face these restrictions.
