For anyone who lives in or has traveled through North Bihar, Muzaffarpur isn't just a city it’s the unofficial capital of the region. But for years, it has existed in the shadow of Patna. That might be about to change if a recent bold demand gains traction.

Recently, MLC Brajvasi reached out to CM Nitish Kumar with a proposal that has set off a fresh wave of conversation across the state. The ask is simple but massive: Declare Muzaffarpur the sub-capital of Bihar and establish a permanent High Court bench in North Bihar, specifically in Muzaffarpur.

If you look at the map of Bihar, the logic makes a lot of sense. Patna is the heart of administration, but for someone living in Sitamarhi, Motihari, or Sheohar, reaching Patna for even small legal or administrative work is an exhausting, expensive journey. Muzaffarpur sits right at the center of this belt. It is already a commercial hub and the "Gateway to the North."

The demand for a High Court bench is especially emotional for local residents. Imagine a farmer or a small-business owner having to travel all day and spend a night in Patna just to attend a short court hearing. It drains people’s resources. MLC Brajvasi argued that giving Muzaffarpur sub-capital status wouldn't just be a symbolic win; it would genuinely bring governance and justice to the people’s doorstep.

Beyond the legal aspect, there’s also the question of city pride and development. Making Muzaffarpur a sub-capital would mean more government offices, better infrastructure, and a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Of course, the Muzaffarpur regional development plan has been discussed in hushed tones for a while, but this public push directly to the Chief Minister puts the ball in the government's court. Whether the administration takes it seriously or views it as another political stunt remains to be seen. But for the people of North Bihar, the dream of not having to run to Patna for every small necessity is a dream worth holding onto.
