News India Live, Digital Desk : In a major move to provide financial relief to millions of consumers, the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced a significant reduction in fixed charges for the new financial year. This decision comes as a breath of fresh air for domestic, commercial, and industrial users across the state, who have been grappling with rising utility costs.
The Big Announcement: Lower Fixed Charges for 2026-27
The BERC has officially revised the power tariff structure, slashing the fixed charges by up to 15-20% across several categories. Fixed charges are the mandatory costs paid by consumers regardless of their actual electricity consumption. By lowering this base cost, the Bihar government aims to reduce the overall monthly expenditure for middle-class families and small business owners.
Impact on Domestic and Rural Consumers
The primary beneficiaries of this update are urban and rural domestic consumers.
Urban Households: Families in cities like Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur will see a noticeable dip in their bills as the fixed component per kilowatt has been scaled down.
Rural Areas: To support the rural economy, the commission has kept rural fixed charges at a minimum, ensuring that electricity remains affordable for farmers and village-based small industries.
Smart Meter Benefits: Consumers with prepaid smart meters will see these reduced charges automatically adjusted in their daily deductions, making the transition seamless.
Boost for Small Businesses and MSMEs
Small-scale industries and commercial establishments, such as retail shops and showrooms, have also received a significant boost. The reduction in fixed costs is expected to lower the operational expenses for MSMEs in Bihar, fostering a more competitive business environment.
Why Did the Rates Drop?
The BERC cited improved operational efficiency of the state’s power distribution companies—North Bihar Power Distribution Company (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company (SBPDCL)—as a key reason for this relief. Reduced transmission losses and better revenue collection through widespread smart meter installation have allowed the commission to pass these savings directly to the end-users.
When Will the New Rates Apply?
The new tariff structure and reduced fixed charges will come into effect starting April 1, 2026. Consumers will see the reflected changes in the bills generated in May. Importantly, the commission has also decided not to implement any significant hike in per-unit energy charges, making this a double win for the people of Bihar.
