Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, announced on Sunday that the new Navi Mumbai International Airport would open in June.
Previously, it was allocated to be launched on April 17. The new greenfield airport, which, along with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, serves the Mumbai Metropolitan area, is managed by a special purpose vehicle, NMIAL, which has a joint stake between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) of 74:26.
In 2018 February Prime Minister Modi laid the first stone for the new airport, which is being constructed with an investment of 16,700 crore rupees and aims to reduce congestion in the already busy Mumbai Airport, as well as the increasing need of air travel in the country. "Visited the Navi Mumbai International Airport site today — a world-class airport taking shape. It is going to be a key landmark in global aviation," Modi tweeted.
“*A true gift to India!*, as Adani puts it in a post on X. Adani did not hesitate to express his appreciation for the Adani Airports team and its collaborators, stating, *Kudos to the Adani Airports team & partners for making this vision a reality*," he added in the post. Previously, in late December, Arun Bansal, the CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd had stated to the press, *Our aim is to make the commercial inauguration on the 17th of April*.
Jalan proclaimed following the successful trial landing on December 29, 2024, of the first civil passenger plane at the airport still under development, *Domestic activities are anticipated to commence in the latter half of May, while international activities are projected to begin at the end of July*. Once all five phases of construction are finalized, the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will include two runways and four terminals, will be able to service 90 million passengers annually.”
