Monsoon 2026: Much-Awaited Rain Set to Advance Across North India; Delhi Arrival Likely by July 4 as UP Reels Under Severe Heat

Post

Relief from the punishing, humid summer is finally on the horizon for Delhi and several parts of North India. After an unusually brutal summer spell and a delayed seasonal timeline, weather agencies have confirmed that atmospheric conditions are rapidly turning favourable for widespread monsoon rains.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is projected to deepen over the North Arabian Sea, Uttarakhand, and major portions of Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days. The apex weather agency expects the system to spread its coverage across the rest of northern India over the next five to six days, systematically dismantling the lingering heatwave.

Why is the Monsoon Arriving Late in Delhi?

The national capital, which typically welcomes the monsoon by June 27 or 28, is experiencing roughly a one-week delay this season. Private weather forecaster Skymet has predicted that the monsoon will officially mark its arrival in Delhi by July 4, provided current environmental metrics hold steady.

Meteorologists have pinpointed the exact scientific reason behind this sluggish progression:

The Air Mass Conflict: The delay stems from a continuous tug-of-war between two contrasting air masses—dry westerly winds pushing in from Pakistan and moisture-heavy southwesterly winds migrating from the Arabian Sea.

High Daytime Temperatures: This interaction has triggered sporadic cloud formation over Delhi, primarily in the late afternoon. However, because the system currently lacks sufficient moisture to produce widespread, sustained rainfall, the clouds simply trap heat, keeping daytime temperatures exceptionally high despite overcast skies.

Temperature Check: Delhi's Humid "Feels-Like" Surge

The transition period has proven to be incredibly taxing for Delhi residents. The capital logged its warmest morning in two years on Sunday, registering a minimum temperature of 31.1°C (3.2 degrees above the seasonal average) and a maximum spike of 41.8°C.

The Humidity Factor: Due to a massive influx of atmospheric moisture, the IMD reported that the real-feel temperature, or heat index, soared to a staggering 50.7°C by late afternoon.

Fortunately, localised thunderstorms with intermittent rain are already on the radar, providing temporary relief before the official monsoon line crosses the city.

Heatwave Persists in Uttar Pradesh Before Final Relief

While eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh are bracing for imminent relief via thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, severe heatwave conditions continue to batter the central and western districts for now.

CityRecorded Maximum TemperatureDeviation From Normal
Prayagraj43.4°CAppreciably Above Normal
Lucknow39.7°C3.6°C Above Normal

The IMD maintains that while the mercury will remain high for the next 24 to 48 hours across Uttar Pradesh, the gradual, steady crawl of the monsoon will steadily trigger widespread rain, successfully breaking the heatwave cycle by later this week.
